(Woodcliff Lake, NJ) Statement by Christina Wang, Action Team Member:

Sexual education in health curriculums at schools nationwide are incredibly important to young people. They serve an integral purpose in determining how youths view sexuality, and they - ideally - ensure that young students make their own independent sexual decisions that keep them safe, healthy, and happy. However, has this ever been the case?

As of January 2015, only 22 states and the District of Columbia require that public schools teach sex education, and only 20 of these said states mandate sex education and HIV education. 33 states and the District of Columbia require that students learn about HIV/AIDS. A mere 19 states require that if provided, sex education must be medically, factually or technically accurate (NCSL, 2015).

Day of the Girl - US is appalled by these statistics, and is determined to unite young female activists everywhere so that the traditional American health curriculum can become relevant and comprehensive. Thus, in order to tackle an issue that affects too many young people everywhere, the Day of the Girl - US action team is launching a year-long project.

The objective of this project is to get girls to transform their health curriculums in their respective school communities, and eventually, have practically every region’s health curriculums revamped. We plan on doing this by having girls who live in the same local area work together and individually target their school officials. We are also looking forward to collaborating with other organizations that could assist youth activists in this project, along with helping these organizations with acts or bills that they are attempting to pass that pertain to the improvement of sexual education.

The Day of the Girl - US action team strives to emphasize that young people should and can have a voice in issues that matter to them, and this project at its core will be run by young female activists. They will have the opportunity and the ability to create substantial changes to their own health curriculum, and see that their age is nothing less than a number when it comes to affecting their communities.

For any young activists that want to reform their sexual education curriculum, please reach out to Christina Wang. If you don't know if your sex education curriculum is comprehensive or not, don't worry! We have a list for you which you can download below!

This is wonderful. We are doing this in South Africa and distributing Subz washable sanitary pads and panties. Our girls don’t have access to sanitary pads and are missing 1 week per month of school.
