I’ve said it before and I will say it again: a commemorative day is almost entirely useless if it exists without cultivating a progressive and productive movement for change.
Day of the Girl’s greatest and most important strength is that it is utilized by girls everywhere to pursue tangible advancements towards equity, beginning with efforts like our Proclamation Project, and continuing with the 2014 Rally Project. Putting the power in the hands of the people who are effected the most by the neglect and devaluation of girls is crucial, and yet overlooked by so many organizations everywhere. I have always been frustrated with the way that many organizations discount young people’s perspective and contributions, and girls face that to an even greater degree. The girls that I have had the privilege of working with during my time as an activist are leaders, fighters, and an absolute inspiration. But I know that they are not the only ones who have the power to make a difference. I want every girl to have that chance.
Young female change-makers, make your voices heard! You are powerful and intelligent leaders who have throughout history been subjected to forced silence. Thank you for the passion and bravery you exhibit every single day.
